The One and Only

Social media has had many effects on modern society in every country in the world.  From recording news events as they happen to making and posting crazy videos for people to follow, people are using their personal devices as an outlet to the world.  The most telling effect of social media is the selfie.  People have become absorbed with themselves.   Whether it is informing the world where they are and what they are doing or posting their thoughts and beliefs or pictures of themselves it seems that everyone is posting something to promote themselves.  Who is the professional, the authority, to whom should we listen are questions we ask as the answers become more confusing.

In our confused world of self-promotion there is one thing of which we can be sure, Jesus is the one and only.  He is the centerpiece of the Bible.  Scripture is all about the revelation of Jesus the Christ to every person.  Jesus Himself declares to be the way, the truth, and the life to approach God.  There are three imperatives of Jesus’ oneness found in scripture.

First, Jesus is revealed as the Promised One.  God is the keeper of all His promises.  What He says will happen.  When Adam and Eve listened to Satan and disbelieved what God had told them, leading them into disobedience, God promised a savior.

“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” Genesis 3:15

This savior is Jesus the Christ.

Abraham is considered the Father of the Promise.  God chose Abraham and made to him three promises.  Abraham was promised a son, the land of Cannan, and he would father a great nation.  Through this nation God would bless everyone who ever lived.

“And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.” Genesis 22:18

This blessing is Jesus the Christ.

Next, Jesus is revealed as the Anointed One.  Jesus was the fulfillment of God’s promise to take care of sin and reconcile mankind to Himself.  He was the one who was chosen and appointed to bear the sins of the world and its punishment.  If people trust in Jesus, repenting of their sin, then they will be forgiven and restored to a right relationship with their Creator.  To accomplish this Jesus, the man, was filled with Jesus, the Son of God.  He was the God-man, fully God and fully man.  The title Christ is the Greek word for Messiah.  Messiah is the Hebrew word ascribed to the Savior from sin, the Anointed One.

“Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.  And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.” Daniel 9:25-26

This anointed one is Jesus the Christ.

Lastly, Jesus is acknowledged by His disciples as the One and only.  Being the anointed God-man Jesus was special in significant ways.  He had no earthly father nor attachment to this world.  Jesus had no nature of sin nor allurement to sin.  Jesus had a right and intimate relationship with God His Father.  He was the perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world.  As mentioned earlier, Jesus revealed Himself as the only way for a person to enter into a right relationship with God Almighty.  He gives to those who trust in Him eternal life which cannot be taken away.  There is no other way to God.

“Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.  And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.” John 6:68-69

This One is Jesus the Christ.

This Christmas season believe in Jesus the Christ, the promised anointed one.  Today believe in Jesus the one and only.
