A Precious Gift

Since we were children, we have all longingly looked forward to receiving gifts.  Whether it was our birthday, Christmas or just for no reason the expectation of a gift was overwhelming.  Talk about being antsy.  In my sixty-eight years I have received many gifts.  Some were just what I wanted, while others were not quite as fulfilling.

The Lord God has also given us many gifts all of which work in each believer a work of faith.  The gifts from God are spiritual and are for a believer’s sanctification and service.

One of His gifts to people is His Word, the Bible.  Once received it becomes a precious possession, an awesome treasure.  To a believer the Bible is the most treasured possession they will ever own.  Though there are exhortations throughout scripture explaining the vast worth of the Bible, its value is concisely in Psalm 19.

Psalm 19

7  The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple;

8  the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes;

9  the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.

Let us begin with verse ten.  The Bible’s value is beyond all that we could hope to attain in this world.  There is nothing to compare it with by which it could be bought or exchanged.  The alluring desire for it is greater than any other pleasure.  Nothing can be substituted for it since it is the satisfier of our soul.

There are six words in this short passage used to describe the Word of God.  They are law, testimony, precepts, commandment, fear [reverence] and rules.  These are words by which we are to faithfully live our lives.  They hold conditional promises of grace through which we are continually blessed.

The perfect law of God’s kingdom revives and refreshes the inner man as we find perfect peace in Jesus through our obedience to His Word.  Trusting in His Word we experience the assured wisdom of His thoughts and ways.  His teachings are right and just, which lightens the burden heavily resting upon each heart.  Each commandment in scripture is easy to bear and not a burden to obey.  In our reverence for Jesus, we find humility, repentance, and cleansing.  The truth of God’s Word provides us with absolute rules for life by which our actions are just.

By cherishing the Word of God, we place ourselves in the realm of Kingdom life.  We live as we are meant to live, as we were created to live.  In His Word we experience the love of our Creator, the peace with our Creator, and the joy in our Creator.  Let us take the Word of God into our lives and cherish this great treasure which the Lord has given to mankind.
