A Misunderstood Truth

In today’s world the idea of absolute truth is a foreign concept.  Truth is considered relevant to the individual.  Each person is their own truth.  But the concept of absolute truth is at the core of the universe, seeing that if certain laws of the universe are considered theories or just possibilities, then our world would begin to deteriorate.  In Christian belief this absolute truth is found in God’s revelation of Himself.  He, as the creator of the universe, is absolute truth.  Therefore, what He says is absolute truth.  What God says He means and what He means He says.

God reveals throughout His Word that sin is our disbelief and disobedience to His Word.  In light of that God, who is holy, righteous and just, says that He will punish sin.

Hebrews 3

12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.

Genesis 2

16  And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

17  But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

When Adam and Eve chose to disbelieve and disobey God they plunged all of mankind into sin.  Each of their descendants are born with a nature to sin.

Genesis 3

6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

If God is the ultimate authoritative truth then He is the one who defines sin not us.  There are several passages where God defines sin.  It is not our opinion, nor is it determined by our life situation.

Romans 1

8  And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.

29  They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips,

30  slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,

31  foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

32 Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

1Corinthians 6

9  Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality,

10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5

19  Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality,

20  idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions,

21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

2 Timothy 3

1  But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty.

2  For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,

3  heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good,

4  treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.

Revelation 21

8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

John in his epistles informs us that we all sin, but that those who have by faith accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior do not continue living a lifestyle of sin.  We can not for the Holy Spirit of Jesus abides in each believer.  But those who have rejected Jesus as their Lord and Savior, who continue to live a lifestyle of sin, do not know Him nor do they have a place in eternity with Him [1 John 2:1-6, 1 John 3:1-10].

To plainly put it, God can not and will not tolerate disbelief and disobedience.  Always do the right thing and when in doubt then don’t.

James 4

17 So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
